The economy is in the dumps. Corporations are not hiring, and many managers are asking staff to do more for less.

As a consequence, the number of discontented workers is higher than ever. Now, to be honest, we have always had a good number of folks that were unhappy with the job. The difference now is that although more people are not happy with their job, fewer folks are actually beginning a search for that next career.

Nevertheless a bad economy does not mean that you shouldn’t be searching for new and better possibilities. If you are happier at work, your output will increase, your employer will improve results from your work, and in the end, everyone will be better off.

However , most people do not change careers regularly and as a consequence they get stuck in convictions and habits that work against them, not for them. In an article on good second careers, I talk about enormous mistakes people make when going thru a career change. Here are the top three:

1. Giving up before beginning. “The economy is bad, unemployment is high, I will not find something else”. Seem all too familiar? The reality is that as there are far more applicants applying for a position, you can actually stand out better from the pile of thousands of resumes, if you know the way to distinguish yourself from the pack.

2. Focusing on a resume and nothing else. There are plenty of folk who think that a resume is the most important thing when looking for a different career. Nothing could be farther from the honest truth. A resume is one tool in an arsenal of many [**] and certainly not the most effective.

3. Relying on executive recruiters to do the work for you. Executive recruiters are like purchasers for corporations. They identify the most suitable product (candidate) for a corporation and get paid for that service. Executive recruiters have their place, but counting on them to do your work is a big mistake. What’s that work? Marketing and selling that product yourself.
