What if your dream is to become a pilot but you just can’t afford the training for your Private Pilot’s Certificate, which can run about $8,000, much less your Commercial Certificate which can easily costs $30,000 plus?

Many young would be pilots have faced this same dilemma. It can be frustrating but if you really want it, you will find creative ways of getting your Pilot’s License. If you are 100 % serious that this is the career for you, we highly encourage checking out the military – the Air Force or the Navy. But do plenty of research into military flight schools and thoroughly question your recruiter first. Military flight programs are notoriously tough but you will come out as a mature pilot and an advantage over civilian pilots in the job search. and best of all- no flight school debt!

But, there is always a way of you are willing to put in the effort and hard work. If flying is your dream, your passion and you can’t imagine anything else you’d rather be doing then don’t- give- up. Dream but be realistic as well. Look for alternate routes to where you want to be.

For instance, Tim was much like you. He didn’t have $8,000 burning a hole in his pocket for flight training to get his Private License. But that’s what he wanted more than anything else in the world. So he made a bargain with the owner of a small business that flew banner ads, areial photography and tours. He did whatever non flying job needed to be done in exchange for flying lessons. After a year, he passed his written and flight test and began flying for the owner or that business in order to log fmight hours.

Or take, Bryan for instance. He was able to attend a top flight school and graduated with a Commercial License and all the rating he needed but he also had a huge amount of debt to repay and not enough flight hours to get the job he was targeting- a regional airline. He took as job as an Instructor Pilot at a local airlfield to gain flight hours and also had to work part time at a hotel to make ends meet.

What are they doing now? Bryan is a Captain at a regional airline. He moved his way up the ranks and his goal is to eventually Captain at a major airline. Tim loves being an Instructor Pilot for the U.S. Army.
