Bhagavat Gita And Arjuna
Hindus think about Kurukshetra war as a crucial turning point in Mahabharata. It was in this combat that, Krishna, leaving his force to Kaurava side, became the charioteer of Prince Arjuna. Krishna had actually given the choice to choose him or his army, to both the sides. Duryodhana chose Krishna’s force and Arjuna chose Lord Krishna. In this combat Lord Krishna advises prince Arjuna and reveals the truths about life. These insights were collectively referred to as Bhagavat Gita.
Gita.
Gita comprises of advises given to Arjuna at the time of war because he was in a dilemma whether to fight the combat against his cousins, companions and gurus. Krishna describes the responsibilities he has to perform in the role of a warrior and a prince. He also describes on karma and dharma. This text contains several philosophies, examples and references. It is in Kurukshetra war that Krishna reveals his identity as the absolute truth by displaying his Vishwarupa. Lord Krishna informs Arjuna that Kurukshetra war will ensure the win of dharma and let it persist.
Gita describes the important truths about life as Kaala, Dharma, Ishwara, Jiva and Prakriti. This universe is controlled by the supreme power Ishwara. The fundamental nature of intelligence is Prakriti, by which the universe works. Living and non-living beings are created on this base. Kaala means age or time. Dharma is nature’s law, which holds all the forces together.
Bhagavat Gita basically projects the idea that one has to grow beyond the physical limitations of self and identify oneself with the supreme soul. Bhagavat Gita is contained Mahabharata, which is a Hindu epic, and contains 700 verses.
Some Verses.
One of the most important verses in Bhagavat Gita is ‘Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya… Srijamyaham’. Through these lines Lord Krishna assures Arjuna that when the universe becomes affected by Adharma and Dharma is not at all protected, he will take birth again and protect the universe from evil forces. Another verse ‘Paritranaya Sadhunam… Yuge Yuge’, is also very important. As per this verse, Krishna is believed to take birth again in each epoch in order to protect the world and save its beings. He will destroy evil forces and protect the saints.
Apart from Arjuna, Bhagavat Gita was also heard by Sanjaya – the associate of Dhritarashtra (who is blind) – to whom Veda Vyasa had given the power of Divya Drishti, to see the combat entirely. Recital of Gita was also heard by Hanuman and Ghatotkacha’s son Barbarika.
Because Gita is sacred, it is also called Gitopanishad. But as it contains summary of the messages, it is also called Upanishad of Upanishads.
