Park Ji-Sung Staying with United

United fans have already had to deal with the loss of one highly rated midfielder, with Englishman Paul Scholes retiring at the end of last season, and now Park Ji-Sung has revealed he wants to do the same, but not for a while yet. The Korean midfielder signed for United back in 2005 from PSV Eindhoven and seems content to finish his playing career at Old Trafford. Despite recent speculation surrounding his future, the midfielder has confirmed that he doesn’t want to seek a different challenge elsewhere, Park revealing: “I want to stay here and I have no reason to leave.”

Now more than ever, it would appear that the Red Devils need to maintain strength in their midfield with Scholes hanging his boots up after an illustrious career during which he made 676 appearances for club and scored 150 goals. Now without this influence, the midfield has to band together and work harder to not miss the play-maker.

Park will very much be a part of United’s plans, impressing many in his time at the club despite some initial doubts at his signing. The scrappy Korean has been lauded for his work ethic which takes him all over the midfield and along the wings.

This is, of course, nothing new, as Sir Alex Ferguson has always regarded Park as a player for the big games, the Korean putting in the performances when they are needed the most, which is exactly what wins titles and Cups. In fact, Ferguson’s decision to omit Park from the 2008 Champions League final has since been described as “the hardest decision I have ever had to make” by the Scottish manager. Ever since then, Park has proved his weight in gold to Sir Alex, appearing in the two consequent Champions League finals against Spanish champions Barcelona to put his name in the history books as the first Asian to play in a Champions League showpiece event.

Influential players including Vidic and Carrick have claimed that there is enough talent and experience within the Red Devils squad to fill Scholes’ vacant boots and Park is certainly a major part of this for the next generation.
